4/30/13 SC&R Foundation Awards $30,000 in Scholarships and Grants

(CENTREVILLE, Va.) April 30, 2013 – The SC&R Foundation recently awarded $3,000 scholarships for 2013-2014 to nine students preparing for careers related to transportation or construction management. Additionally, the Foundation awarded two $1,500 grants.

The scholarships and grants were announced during the Closing Night Awards & Recognition Dinner at the Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association (SC&RA) Annual Conference, April 2-6, at the Westin Kierland, Scottsdale, Ariz. Since 1986, the SC&R Foundation has awarded over $350,000 in scholarships and grants.

In alphabetical order, this year’s $3,000 scholarship recipients are Jared Bigby, Darin Blair, Caleb Brack, Samson Meyer, Mitchell Nettinga, Candice Parrish, Anna Rivas Gonzalez, Ryan Stammen and Alexander Zartman.

Jared Bigby, a Sales and Rental Account Manager at H&E Equipment Services, El Cajon, Calif. plans to earn his Master’s degree in Business and Finance from DeVry Keller Graduate School of Management, San Diego, Calif., by December 2013. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from Willamette University, Salem, Ore. Jared is the recipient of the Christopher Lorenz Memorial Scholarship.

Darin “Brice” Blair, a draftsman at TNT Crane and Rigging, Longview, Texas, plans to attend Kilgore College, Kilgore, Texas as a Mechanical Engineering major. After serving five and a half years of active duty in the U.S. Army with two deployments overseas as a Machinist in the Infantry, he earned an Associate’s degree in Computer Aided Drafting from Texas State Technical College, Marshall, Texas. Brice is the recipient of the Bennett International Continuing Education Scholarship.

Caleb Brack, is a Civil Engineering major at The Citadel, Charleston, S.C., who plans to graduate in May 2016. His father, Levy Brack, is Vice President of Heavy Iron Cranes, Lexington, S.C. Caleb is the recipient of the Southern Industrial/Southern Crane Continuing Education Scholarship.

Samson “Clay” Meyer, a repeat SC&R Foundation Scholarship recipient, is a Business Administration major at the University of Arizona, Tucson, Ariz. His father, Samson Adolph Meyer, is Vice President of Marco Crane and Rigging. Co., Lakeside, Calif., where the scholarship recipient also has worked as a part-time administrative assistant. Samson is the  recipient of the new NBIS Continuing Education Memorial Scholarship.

Mitchell Nettinga, a four-time SC&R Foundation Scholarship recipient, attends Dordt College, Sioux Center, Iowa, where he is pursuing a double major in Business and Accounting. He plans to graduate in May 2014. His Mother, Marlys Nettinga, is a Secretary at Berghorst & Son, Inc., Hull, Iowa.

Candice Parrish, an Accounting Assistant at Yarbrough Transfer Company, Winston-Salem, N.C. is a pursuing a degree in Business Administration, with an emphasis in Human Resource Management, from Baker College, Flint, Mich.  She is the recipient of the Mammoet USA Continuing Education Memorial Scholarship.

Ana Rivas Gonzalez, a Sales Coordinator and Data Manager for South America at Mammoet USA, Inc., Rosharon, Texas, plans to earn a Master of Business Administration degree this year from American InterContinental University, Schaumburg, Ill.

Ryan Stammen, a Finance IT Manager at PSC Crane & Rigging, Piqua, Ohio, plans to earn his Master of Business Administration degree from Indiana Wesleyan University, Marion, Ind., by February 2014. He holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Finance and Management from the University of Dayton, Dayton, Ohio. Ryan is the recipient of the Terex Continuing Education Memorial Scholarship.

Alexander Zartman, attends Pennsylvania State University, State College, Pa., where he plans to earn a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Architectural Engineering by May 2015. His father, David Zartman, is President of Zartman Construction, Inc., Northumberland, Pa., where Alexander worked full-time in the summers of 2011 and 2012. Alexander is the recipient of the George Bragg Memorial Scholarship.

Additionally, the Foundation awarded $1,500 grants to Eduardo Hernandez and Rocky Wilson.

Rocky Wilson, Safety Director at RMS Cranes, LLC, Denver, Colo., plans to use the grant to help fund his attendance at a program such as the Associated General Contractors of America’s Advanced Study Management Training Course or the Rocky Mountain Health & Safety Conference.

Eduardo Hernandez, a Junior Auditor at Tradelossa, Monterrey, Mexico, plans to use his grant for Basic Hydraulic and Pneumatics technical classes at Escuela Electronica Monterrey.
